MAGNESIUM - COULD YOU BE DEFICIENT!!

Magnesium is crucial to the overall balance between calcium, potassium, and sodium. These four minerals work synergistically and it is estimated that over three-quarters of the population is deficient in magnesium. Calcium needs to be in balance with magnesium at a rate of 2:1 or 1:1. If you suffer from muscle cramps, a jumping muscle or eyelid, you are more than likely deficient in magnesium. If you take an antacid on a regular basis, the likelihood of deficiency is close to 100% because stomach acid is needed for its absorption.

Clinical studies have clearly documented that if you suffer from Type 2 diabetes, you have too much calcium and too little magnesium inside your cells. If you suffer from arthritis, cataracts, kidney stones, a lot of tartar in your teeth and/or bursitis, you do not absorb calcium inside your cells due to a magnesium deficiency and the excess calcium deposits in your joints and tissues creating these conditions. Although you would be tempted to start a magnesium supplement when reading the above symptoms, your diet and medication taken will dictate the micronutrient combination you will need.

If you suffer from constipation, magnesium oxide will help this issue but this form will also throw off the balance with calcium as it isn’t well absorbed inside the cell. And be careful with dosage as it can precipitate calcium and cause crystals leading to the above-mentioned issues. The body will always work very hard to rebalance the inner workings of your body and if you have symptoms, it’s a sign that something is missing OR in excess.

High blood pressure can be treated with magnesium - how awesome is that! But if you are on blood thinners, do not take a magnesium supplement as it also has blood thinning properties.

The fine balance of taking supplements is best left to the experts in this field to guide you because you could be causing more damage than good by randomly taking supplements. It’s always best to consult with a Certified Orthomolecular Health Practitioner who specializes in addressing specific micronutrient deficiencies.
